The Importance of Radon Assessments in Schools:

In our ongoing commitment to creating safer indoor environments, RadonWise recently embarked on a significant project – assessing radon levels in 10 local schools within the Calgary area. This initiative is part of our broader goal to ensure that every indoor space, especially where children spend a substantial part of their day, is safe and healthy.

​Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, can pose serious health risks, particularly in young, developing lungs. As children spend a significant amount of time in school buildings, ensuring these environments are free from elevated levels of radon is crucial.

Our Approach:

Our team of CANADIAN – NATIONAL RADON PROFICIENCY PROGRAM (C-NRPP) certified technicians employed state-of-the-art detectors to measure radon levels in various areas of each school, including classrooms, libraries, and gymnasiums. The process was conducted with minimal disruption to school activities.

Next Steps:

RadonWise will send the collected radon samplers to a certified laboratory for thorough analysis. This step is critical to ensure the accuracy and reliability of our initial assessments in determining radon concentration in our schools.

Once we receive the lab results, we will compare these findings against Health Canada's radon guidelines, which set a safety threshold of 200 Bq/m³. This comparison is essential to understand the extent of radon exposure and to determine the necessary mitigation steps.

Based on these confirmed results, RadonWise will collaborate closely with each school's administration to develop tailored mitigation strategies. Our approach will be multi-faceted, potentially including improving ventilation systems, sealing radon entry points, and installing specialized radon reduction systems, all designed to effectively lower radon levels to within safe limits.

Our commitment extends beyond immediate mitigation. RadonWise will also provide guidance for ongoing monitoring to ensure that radon levels remain consistently low, safeguarding the health and well-being of students and staff over the long term.
